I shook my head. “What contest?”
“A
customer satisfaction contest. It’s a county wide event to stimulate the local
economy. Any business with less than four full time employees is eligible. Have
every single client you see fill out a ballot. The winner with the most ballots
gets a free billboard and newspaper advertising.”
“Wow,
that would be terrific, especially during tax season.”
“My
sentiments exactly. Enjoy your lunch.”
Since
I was meeting up with my mother it was unlikely but I appreciated the
sentiment. Climbing into my little red Prius, I motored the few blocks to the
Chinese restaurant nestled between the post office and Lynn’s Laundromat.
The
server, Kym, greeted me like an old friend. “Good to see you today, Daisy. Your
mother is already seated.”
“Fantabulous.”
Shrugging out of my coat, I followed Kym to our usual booth nestled back in the
kitchen. My mother stood up and gave me a hug. She was wearing a white sweater
dress with a large gold belt made of shiny disks and white satin pumps. Her
hair was tucked under a fuzzy white hat, a look that transformed her into a
Bond girl—retired, but still stunning.
“Daisy,
sweetums, how are you, how’s work going, are you seeing anyone new?”
“Mom,
can you wait until I sit down to commence the interrogation?” My mother was nosy
with a capitol N. She called it “being involved in my life,” and though she wasn’t
a gossip her onslaught of questions always unsettled me. I tried to stick to
safe topics but between work and Catwoman, my life was either very boring or
way too hot to handle.
“Sorry,
hon, it’s just that you haven’t been around too much lately. I’m curious, you
know.”
“Oh,
I know.” Kym came up to take my drink order. Mom was sipping from a dainty cup
of hot Chinese tea. If I were smart, I’d have the same.
“Sierra
Mist,” I said.
Mom
grimaced. “Oh honestly Daisy, that stuff is pure sugar. You’ll end up with
adult acne and cavities and then where will you be?”
“At the dentist, and dermatologist I’d imagine. They have families to feed, too. Cycle of life, Mom.”
“At the dentist, and dermatologist I’d imagine. They have families to feed, too. Cycle of life, Mom.”
The
best part about mom was that she had a very short attention span and my choice
in beverages was soon forgotten as she headed for murkier territory. “So,
what’s new?”
I
stared at the silk screen portraying a classic Chinese garden with Koi pond and
a looming heron while mentally ticking through what I’d been doing since last
week. Spanking, ball gag, translating W-2’s, W-4’s, filing, flogging. One guy
had brought his girlfriend in to our session and I’d supervised as she beat his
fleshy ass with a riding crop while he wore a butt plug with a horse tail. I
pictured explaining that to Mom and grimaced.
Sometimes
not sharing was caring.
“Not
much,” I said. “How’s work?”
Mom
launched into a blow by blow of her business—real estate,—her dates—there’d
been four—and her yoga class. My mother was a voluptuous woman with a very full
life. So was I, although I couldn’t talk about it in vanilla settings.
Mom
ordered a bowl of hot and sour soup and a plate of steamed broccoli. I went
with General Tao’s chicken, pork fried rice and a spring roll.
“You
know Daisy, I have this cute little Cape Cod,” Mom began.
I
resisted the urge to bang my head on the table. “Mom, we’ve had this talk. I am
not ready to become a homeowner. Besides, Aunt Robbie needs me there.”
“Pish,”
Mom waved her French manicure in a dismissive gesture. “Roberta would be fine
on her own.”
“No,
Mom, she wouldn’t. She has hoarding tendencies. If I didn’t go in and routinely
throw out stuff, she’d be buried under a mountain of crap.”
What
I didn’t say was that Aunt Roberta only started hoarding after my mother and I
had moved out the first time. We’d lived with her for most of my childhood out
of necessity. Roberta had taken us in and supported us while Mom was busy
getting her realtor’s license and building her business. She’d been devastated
when Mom bought her own place and we’d moved out. She had no children of her
own, was retired from the post office and nothing to occupy her time except
stuff. And more stuff.
Mom
knew all this, so there was no sense rehashing the obvious. It wasn’t her fault
she didn’t want to live with her sister anymore, but she couldn’t understand
why I did.
We
parted with a hug and a vague inclination to meet up over the weekend, which
would never happen. Mom was usually booked Friday night through Sunday
afternoon, excluding all federal holidays.
I
spent the rest of the afternoon at my desk ironing out Duran Price’s hodgepodge
of receipts and wondering if he would follow through with dinner.
At
quarter to three, Chloe perched on the edge of my desk. “Do you have anyone
else scheduled for today?”
I
shook my head. “My three o’clock called to reschedule.”
“Plans
tonight?”
“Tonight’s
scrapbooking.” Liar liar, flogger on fire.
“Why
don’t you call it a day? Frenchy and I can manage.”
I
smiled, grateful. Denise flipped her the bird, which Chloe ignored. Gathering
up the mess of receipts, I stuffed them into my laptop bag, collected the rest
of my things and left. Madame Minerva’s here I come.
Happy release weekend!
